Komen eten ! / Dinner's ready !

Wat is dat toch met al die kookprogramma's op TV tegenwoordig?  BV's die bij je thuis komen koken met wat ze vinden in je ijskast.  Hobbykoks die elkaar uitnodigen voor een diner bij hen thuis.  En er zijn nog vele andere formats.  Dan heb je nog de bekende koks zoals Jamie Oliver, die nonchalant allerlei lekkers op tafel tevoorschijn toveren.

Ja, toverij lijkt het soms wel.  Heel af en toe kijk ik met mijn moeder eens mee en dan lachen we ons vooral een kriek met de commentaren die de proevers geven achter de rug van de dienstdoende kok.  Maar zelf heb ik niet echt iets met koken.  Ik kan de gewone dingen klaarmaken, maar daarmee is dan ook alles gezegd.  Een passie is het helemaal niet.  Ik kook eerder uit pure noodzaak.  Verse soep maken en een cake bakken, daar heb ik nog wel deugd van.  De heerlijke geur van gebakken ajuintjes en gestoofde groentjes, mmmm.  Ik ben gek op verse groentensoep!  En de zoete, lekkere geur die zich door de keuken verspreidt als er een cake in de oven zit.  Om helemaal van weg te smelten.

Nee, koken is niet mijn ding.  Elke avond droom ik ervan dat iemand mij roept om te 'komen eten !'.  Net zoals vroeger, toen ik gewoon kon aanschuiven aan tafel en genieten van mijn moeders geweldige kookkunsten.  Hier bij ons thuis ben ik altijd blij als het avondeten erop zit.  Dan begint mijn avond.  Erg, hé.
Misschien zou het anders zijn als ik een mooie, ruime, goed verlichte en praktische keuken had.  Maar misschien ook niet.  Mijn passie ligt meer in creatief zijn met woord en beeld.  Ieder zijn meug, niet waar ?

What's with all the cooking programs on TV ?  In Belgium there is an overload of cooking formats on TV these days.  And you also have famous cooks like Jamie Oliver who magically cook delicious dishes, as if there is nothing to it.

To me it often seems like magic.  Every now and then I watch a cooking program together with my mother.  We always have a good laugh when we hear the invitees' criticism behind the cook's back.  Personally, I don't love cooking so much. I can cook everyday dishes, but that's as far as it goes.  It's not at all a passion of mine, like it seems to be the case for so many people these days. The only thing I enjoy making is soup and cake.  I love the smell of baked onions and vegetables, and I'm very fond of soup.  I could live on soup and fruit alone.  I also adore the delicious sweet smell that fills the kitchen when a cake is in the oven.  Lovely !!!

No, cooking is no hobby of mine.  I'm always glad when I can go to my mother's and taste the wonderful dishes she makes.  My mother's a fantastic cook.  In my house I'm always relieved when dinner's over.  Then I can finally relax and enjoy the rest of the evening.  It might be different if I had a larger and more beautiful kitchen, but then again it might not be.  My passion is being creative with words and pictures.  That's what I do best.  I'd gladly leave the cooking to someone else.  I'd be happy to come and taste it, though ;-)
